Robert S. Haugen Italy/roma/Rome [Oct 14, 2007] I rented a car in Rome, Italy for four days. The car broke down twice, once in Tuscany region which required us to travel to another city via train to pick up the replacement car. The replacement car was too small to fit our luggage in so that required us to pick our original car up in Florence the following day. The original Alfa Romeo 159 wagon, which was supposedly fixed, then broke down (clutch gave out)while we were driving along the Amalfi Coast to Positano on a road called Le Dragon. No service was offered by Europcar at 9:00 at night via the 800 number except to pick up the car. We arranged our own taxi pickup through the Hotel Villa Franca in Positano which cost us 130 Euro. We were required to stay with our car until the tow truck arrived which was about 1 hour after the taxi arrived. The overall experience was very disappointing. As a business man who lives in the United States I have rented from all the major rental companies. Sure I have had car issues before but the companies have taken full responsiblity of the car, arranged for pickup of the car, and brought the replacement car to the destination of choice. My email is bh@emdat.com if you have any comments you would like to share. |
Susanad United States/CA/Los Angeles [Oct 18, 2007] Too bad I read the negative reviews for Europcar AFTER finding out the hard way that they are run by con artists!
I rented a car through holidayautos.com, paid upfront, and picked up the car in Malaga, Spain with no problem. The car was fine, clean. I drove to Madrid where I had arranged to drop it off at the airport before catching a flight. The drive took longer than planned so by the time my husband and I arrived to the airport we were pressed for time to catch our flight. Of course there was no attendant in the office, so I had to wait 5-10 minutes before turning in the key. The man asked me if there was any damage, which there wasn't, and I told him that we didn't have time to fill up the tank was all. So he took my credit card and made me sign a sheet. I noticed that there was a total of 155 Euros and I asked him why. In my nervous, rushed state I didn't realize that I was trusting him to be honest and didn't quite understand his Spanish, but I gathered that I would only be charged the amount for gas. He gave me the slip and said that was it.
When I returned to the U.S. I received a credit card statement with 260 Euros worth of charges! I called Europcar and they said they were charging me for damages! What damages??????? They said that when I signed the slip I was authorizing them to survey the vehicle and charge me for any damages that they could muster up! Now my credit card company can't do anything because I naively signed the form. What about the remaining 105 Euros, I asked. They claimed that they have a signature for that as well! They are going to try to claim it is for gas, but hopefully I can prove to VISA that the gas should be included in the 155 Euros.
Obviously the lesson I learned is to never trust anyone even if it means miss my flight? I had never had a rental company claim damages that weren't there, but Europcar took advantage of me and did. Now that I am out to ruin their reputation, I realize that they already have a bad one! I'm not the only one they have scammed. So, if you or someone you know is thinking of renting from Europcar, DON'T! It's not worth the cheaper rates because you will end up paying more!
Summary: Europcar is run by con artists who find a way to charge you for fake damages |
Latz Martin Germany/NRW/Huertgewnald [Dec 15, 2007] Good cars, worstest und unfriendliest service i have ever seen, uprofessional, to avoid |
WLeighner United States/Texas/Boerne [Jan 03, 2008] Scam! DO NOT book with this company. When you arrive at your destination they have "lost" your reservation but, lucky for you, they still have a few vehicles left.........for 3 times the cost! So, you are at the airport in Costa Rica with no car. What are your choices? Stick with the US companies so you can have some recourse and assurances! |
Molly Page Australia/Northern Territories/Darwin [Jan 20, 2008] RIP OFF: WARNING !!!!!!! We rented a Europcar in Darwin Australia, a very generous customer services person advised us that we were allocated 5000km for a total of 25 days. We paid in full. We maintained the car & returned the car, full tank of petrol, having completed approx 3800 kms. Definitely short of the 5000. Less than 10 days after returning to NZ, we found our bank account had be debited AUD300.
Finally we recieved an explanation - we were charged on 100km per day - not the 5000 km !!!! Why, it was in the contract.
We trusted the person in Darwin, we had a verbal agreeement, we were conned!!!!!
Our advice: don't use this company. They are a rip off. Other than that we had a fantastic time in Darwin, an otherwise perfect holiday other than Europcar - thanks guys. |
Jenny Australia/VIC/Melbourne [Mar 07, 2008] no more with Europcar.

Vijay United States/California/San Jose [Jul 09, 2008] A BIG RIP OFF!!!
My wife and I rented a car at the Christchurch Airport, New Zealand for a period of 10 days. We had to give our credit card number when we picked up the car as seems to be standard at most rental places these days. Red flags should have gone up in our heads when we saw the apalling customer service right at the rental desk. We were not sure whether the agent was speaking with us or to the computer monitor. It was amusing to see the two agents on duty bickering amongst themselves while putting our paperwork through. But we were too tired to venture over to another rental company after a long flight. We drove around for 10 days and returned the car at the same location. However, when we dropped off the car we did notice some scratches at the bottom of the rear fender (bumper). A day later we saw a whopping $457 charged to our credit card account. We tried to contact Europcar to get additional information about the extent of the damage and also some proof of repair. We heard nothing substantional except the canned "we'll get in touch with you" response. After about 4 months, we were able to get details of the transcation from the bank that issued our credit card. It came as no surprise to us that the charges were inflated such as $195 for a painting alone.
Avoid Europcar at all cost. |

LUCIAN BOBB Canada/Ontario/Oakville [Sep 18, 2008] I payed in advance with 3 months for a rental car in Munich Airport. I was promised an Opel Vectra or similar. When I arrived to the airport rental car desk I was forced to accept a Chrysler PT Cruiser which is definitely smaller than I was expecting. Then after driving it in Austria on a mountain road I realised it had technical problems with the power steering. I went to a Europcar station in Austria to get a replacement car and I had another bad surprise, I was sent to another station in Germany. They claimed they cannot replace it because it was rented in Germany. Because it wasn't to far I accepted to drive to Germany.
When I arrived in Freilassing in Germany, they tested the car and admitted the power steering pump wasn't working properly (it was making a terrible noise). Finally when I was allmost sure I was going to get another car, they told me they cannot do anything because they don't have any car available. I told them that's not my problem but theirs and they have to solve it but I had to leave eventually driving the same car.
I really didn't expect such a low quality service from a well known rental car company in Germany.
So I recommend think twice before renting with Europcar. |
Willy Boy United Kingdom/Heathrow/London [Nov 06, 2008] Pre-existing damage at pickup at London Heathrow. Had to fill out description of damage before I left. Did that. Staff inspected damage at the exit kiosk. On return, Europcar said they had no record of damage. Asked me to fill out a form describing damage and swearing it was pre-existing. Got back to Canada and found Europcar had billed almost $1000 to my CC.
Challenging through CC company but my sense is they are not bright enough to understand the problem or how to deal with it.
I feel they are defrauding me. Reading other net reviews I am even more convinced of it. I will never use them again. |
