Alamo Rent A Car Reviews

My husband rented a car at the Fort Lauderdale Airport. We waited in line for 45 minutes (there were only 2 people ahead of us.) There were two employees handling the gigantic line. We asked the CSR if we could pay the bill on my card when we returned and he said yes. He also told us he would be putting a hold on my credit card. When we returned the car, the CSR said that we couldn't put it on my card. We didn't want to leave the charges on the original card because it would mess up the APR on that card. We told him what the other CSR told us and he said he couldn't do it. We put the charges on our ATM card. When we returned home, there was a charge on the original credit card from the day we rented it--they didn't put a hold on the card--they charged it! We will never rent from Alamo again.

We reserved a 2-week rental car via Priceline and were "accepted" by Alamo. When we got to Kona, they wanted an additional $9.99 to add a 62 year-old spouse as an authorized driver (much more with airport charges etc.) -- effectively converting a $18 a day rental to a $28 a day rental (high for two weeks). We complained like crazy to Priceline which claimed no responsibility because they booked a single driver rental (your only choice on Priceline)--even when we asked if they thought a $100 a day extra driver charge by Alamo might be their business. (Many companies do not charge extra in order to permit driving by a spouse.) We tried for two days to get by without my wife driving the car but finally went back to airport and paid up. We were third in line and waited half an hour. When we turned car in, every single person on the Alamo shuttle was telling a story about the reasons they would never use Alamo again. Most about waiting more than an hour to pick up a car at the tiny Kona airport. Morals: Don't use Priceline or Hotwire in Kona if you want a second driver--it's a bait and switch consumer fraud. If you book a tour, specify that you don't want Alamo and specify that reservation must cover the needed authorized drivers for the car rental. Want to ignore this? There is a saying: Fool me once: Shame on You. Fool me Twice: Shame on Me. --Jeff Strathmeyer

My wife and I rented a VW from Alamo at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany from April 19 to May 23, 2007. The car was fine and everything went smoothly. Three weeks after we returned to Montreal, we received an invoice for "damages" to the car. The agency is claiming Euro 475 from us for an alleged tiny scratch (defined by the form as less than 2.5 cm) on the rear bumper. The Alamo employee that accepted the car marked this on the return form but failed to point it out to my wife who was returning the car. We have a witness that has verified my wife's version. I can't help to conclude that this is either a silly mistake on the part of the employee or it is a deliberate attempt to squeeze money out of honest and trusting customers. Has anyone had a similar experience with Alamo in Frankfurt? We have written the company in Frankfurt but we have not received any reply!

Alamo has a clever way to double or triple the bill of unsuspecting customers. Over the web, I arranged to rent a car from Alamo for 5 days and received a special weekly rate of $149. My return plans changed and I had to return the car on the fourth day. I fully expected to pay the entire $149 as I agreed and wasn't looking for a pro-rated charge - in fact the confirmation email states that early returns on special weekly rates are not entitled to a proportionate refund. Fine. What I wasn't expecting was that for returning the car *early* my bill jumped from $149 to $288. When you return a car early Alamo considers the contract specifying the special weekly rate to be terminated and instead charges you its default daily rate. Although this claus apparently exists deep in the rental agreement, there was no mention of this in my confirmation email and the when I rented the car the rental agent only mentioned a $15 early return fee, nothing about doubling my bill. When you rent a house at the beach for a week and decide to leave on Friday instead of Saturday, do you expect to pay double for leaving early? As a footnote, after one angry exchange with a customer service rep who yelled at me that it is my "responsibility to read the contract" (maybe I need to bring my attorney next time) and a second follow up call, Alamo did agree to charge me only the original weekly rate. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18964550 for another story on the same topic.

I have had the most terrible customer service of my life today. Regrettably it involved Alamo Car Rental. I travelled for two and a half hours to a branch where I was treated rudely and given no help what so ever in resolving the situation, and no car. I am in the situation where I am paying for a service, but not receiving anything for the privilege. I have used this company many times and I am bitterly disappointed in todays service or lack there off. Some human compassion would have been nice. DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY.

We rented a car from Alamo at the San Jose airport. We were offered the fuel service option with a guaranteed price of $3.81 per gallon. However, it was not explained that we would be charged for a full tank of gas and that we should bring it back empty, just that we were guaranteed that price. So when we dropped the vehicle off with a half a tank of gas, we assumed that we would be charged just to fill it at the price of $3.81. Our receipt showed a full tank, but I assumed they just were showing what a full tank would be and that they would adjust it accordingly. Wrong. I called Alamo this morning to see what the final price was and they said it was the same. The customer service rep explained that we had agreed to purchase a full tank, but very quickly offered to refund half since we returned the car with half a tank of gas. I was fine with that. She then put me on hold and when she came back on, she said that she could only refund me $25 since she had to use the refueling option at $5.63 per gallon. I told her that it was outrageous that they were charging that much per gallon more. The gas station outside the airport was $4.25 and we definitely would have filled the tank had we known that we would be paying $5.63. I then spoke with a manager who was of no help whatsoever and finally ended up accepting the $25 refund. So be forewarned if you choose this option and make sure that you bring the car back absolutely empty. If they had just refunded the half that they initially offered, I would have been happy, but they have definitely lost this customer and I will be sure to tell everyone I know about this experience. They obviously don't care about losing customers.

I prepaid for my car and was told to make my choice of cars. As I was leaving the lot I tried to show the attendant my receipt and the fact that the gas tank was 5/6 full.He just waved me on that it wasn't necessary> I drove 91 miles filled the tank back to 5/6 full mark and was handed a bill for $82 for 12 gallons of gas. I told the attendant that I retrurned the car with the same amount of gas as I had left. He stated that could not be the case but I could drag all my luggage to the counter and wait in line to get the charge removed. Meanwhile, I over heard the next customer state the same thing as I had! He had no time to complain. I went into the manager's office and stated my case they had call the disctrict manager! 20 minutes later I got my refund. They made it clear they didn't believe me, even though I showed them mmy receipt for the case. It's obvious this is a regular scam which is condoned by the sdistriict manager. How can someone drive 91 miles and use up 1/2 a tank including the fill up a mile down the road. Most people are in a rush and don't have time to complain.

My wife, 2 yr old son, parents and brother just returned from a week vacation in Florida. We rented a Chrysler van from Alamo and had zero problems. Our family tends to be the one who has problems no matter where or what we do so we expected problems. I went so far as to go by the rental location a day before to ask if a van would be available the day we reserved it. My dad and I showed up, completed the reservation, and was directed to a line of vans and told to pick which ever we wanted. We got a Chrysler that had less than 2,500 miles. We cranked it up, drove off and began our vacation. We had zero problems at all. I checked other rental agencies and Alamo had the best prices by far. Also, some companies like Enterprise say unlimited mileage, but their definition means you have to stay in certain states and you have a maximum of either 2 or 3,000 miles total. I don't remember which. Needless to say, we will definitely rent from Alamo again. Thanks Alamo!

Alama tried to charge us $9.99/day to add my husband to my rental (which equaled a 50% increase in the daily rate we had been quoted). He was added late at night the day after I arrived and the sales rep made no mention of the fee, and did not have him initial the new printout so we were not aware of the charge until we returned the car. Although the Alamo manager at the airport removed the charge once we complained, he was combative, arrogant and had the audacity to claim that the State of Nebraska (in addition to at least 41 other states) made such a charge mandatory. I will not use Alamo again.
